That is very common in those side streets. And the same building, or many times even the only and entire room is also for living, even the whole family, which consist of one child, since it's more tricky to be flexible in the city. If you had the money, you wouldn't be running this shop i guess.

There IS social help in China, but one sees it is not what you can get without doing anything, but what you can do to get anything.

What they are selling are home made 'Zhongzi', a meal that is packed inside banana leaves and then cooked in a bomboo dish with vapour from boiling water.

It usually includes a special kind of thick sticky rice, meat or chicken, dried shrimps, mushrooms and beans. It varies in different parts of China, as for their sizes, tastes and looks. Also, in GuangZhou it's most of the time some soysause with oil or sugar or both, or bare, and maybe chili, but it might change totally upside-down somewhere else in China.
